Background and Purpose of Establishment
Since the start of the Top Global University Project (TGU) in 2014 by MEXT, a variety of efforts to strengthen international capability and improve international compatibility have progressed under the vision of each selected university. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has restricted cross-border movement, and online education/exchanges have expanded rapidly.
Under these circumstances, the Japan Forum for Internationalization of Universities (JFIU) was established in September 2021 with the goal of creating an environment for strengthening cooperation in, and horizontal development of, diverse achievements among a group of universities leading internationalization, as well as further strengthening the international compatibility and competitiveness of higher education.
The JFIU aims to improve the international reputation of Japan’s higher education and create a forum to promote internationalization for all Japanese universities.
Overview of Activities
As a forum to promote the internationalization of Japanese universities, the JFIU will implement, share, and develop internationalization initiatives in cooperation with MEXT.
In this forum, the 18 managing universities will implement 19 projects to promote cooperation among member universities. Furthermore, general meetings and symposiums will be held for the purpose of managing the forum and sharing project activities.
